You see right through me

Hot time, summer in the city! When the temperatures climb in this city, you want to be able to feel the breeze through what your wearing. Make it your shirts and skirts dance in the wind created by our pontificating politicians.

The practice of sheer dressing can be a bit overwhelming if underdone. For example, ensure that you wear a slip that covers your derriere, or leggings when fall comes with the skirt, and a bandeau, full coverage bra, or tank with the shirts. I am not advocating for full coverage at all; however, nipple tassels and a thong is just in bad taste for more reasons that I can even go into. If you want to look like Ice Ts wife, Coco, have at it, just maybe do it in closed quarters.

The following chiffon gems from American Apparel will ensure that you master this trend.

The impact of sheer pieces is in the outline of your body that it creates, like a smoke in mirrors of the female form. The idea is to show off that the top or bottom is actually see through by wearing something that does not follow its lines or color, as these models artfully showcase. I would love to get my hands on the mint green skirt with a knotted chambray shirt or wear the navy shirt with a black bandeau over white denim cut offs.

Office Staples...now that was easy!

Banana Republic Fall 2011 Preview

Banana Republic is featuring fashion that has Audrey Hepburn simplicity with Mad Men sexiness and I couldn't be happier. When my employer recently revisited the dress code and upgraded our workplace attire from business casual to straight business, I slightly panicked. What was I going to do with all of my skirts with shorter hemlines and boho chic blouses? Now, I have an answer. Save those cas pieces for the weekend, and fully embrace the following classic and tailored pieces:

slim crops with visible seams
pointy toe pumps
patterned pencil skirts
black hose
voluminous A-line skirts with pockets
layers of unorganized pearls
crew neck tanks
frame handbags
lace up oxfords
cardigans
chain link bracelets
bright matte lips
pompadour updos
demure black lace
cap sleeve tops

Look at me blush

Club Monaco dress, charles by charles david pumps, XXI purse
For a wedding in the 'burbs, I took out the dress I bought to wear on my birthday....in January, I wore it with black ankle boots, a motorcycle leather jacket, and a jeweled headband. For a humid June day, I kept it simple to showcase the neckline and an amazing Emma Watson styled do...thanks to Kendall at Mario Tricoci.

Cognac & Black

I have to admit, during high school, I may or may not have believed that there was a rule against pairing brown and black. Actually, I didn't believe it...I stood behind with a picket sign rallying mentality. I don't regret it, per se, but, I do now realize the err of my nearsightedness.
Let's just think for a moment about this...leopards, tigers, and other felines are bestowed this color combination by nature. How could nature put a faux pas upon this world intentionally? Before you go there, nature did not create scrunchies or sandals with socks...that can be blamed on us mere mortals. So act like a cat, and pounce on this trend!

The best way I like to do it is as the beauties Anne Hathaway and Kate Moss demonstrated - black as the background and brown as the accents. Although Miss Anne, is right on target for fall, we'll copy Kate Moss' style savvy for the summer months. Anything in your closet that is black...a dress (maxi or mini), tunic, shorts, pants...you get the idea, consider wearing a cognac shoe or belt instead of your black stilettos or thick patent black belt. The incorporation of cognac takes the all black look to a much more casual and boho chic place, which is all the rage for summer.

Brown paper packages tied up with strings...

The traditional "kimono," which literally translates to "thing to wear" is much, much more than that. These Japanese traditional garments, most often made of silk, can exceed $10,000 and consists of 12 separate pieces, which most likely requires the assistance of a professional kimono dresser to put together. The choice of fabric, color, and sleeve length, requires knowledge of the garment's symbolism and subtle social messages, reflecting the woman's age, marital status, and the level of formality of the occasion. And you thought putting together an ensemble for work in the morning was taxing!
Despite love, love, loving the costumes in "Memoirs of a Geisha," my idea of embracing this Eastern traditional garb is less intense on effort, but no less intense when you consider the impact from onlookers.

Nicole Richie's line Winter Kate really hit the nail on the head...or the feather on the peacock with this one. I can imagine it in so many different ways...topping of either a tank tucked into a short A-line skirt or cut offs with a white tee and even belted over a shift dress...the possibilities are endless! I just wish it was a bit less expensive, because at $195, I will certainly be shopping for a more economical replica. It's times like these I wish the mental health field paid better...

If I had a million dollars...

The BNL song of the same name, indicates that he would buy, among other things, a treefort, llama or emu, and an ottoman. No offense, but I would certainly chose different items if I was to come upon $1,000,000. Currently, I peruse shopbop.com for ideas and trends; however, with a seven figure allowance, I would certainly purchase a few things...after taking a trip to Greece & Italy, of course.

The first "I'm a millionaire outfit"? Blazer, cropped pants, blouse, and peep toe pumps topped off with amazing accessories

Rag & Bone Cotton Dinner Blazer - Ivory and bright white piping & collar with a stripe detail that elongates the frame.

Acne Contact Snake Pants - Understated and oh so sexy snakeskin print pulls the ivory from the blazer yet clearly stands alone.
Equipment Signature Blouse - A pop of bright color will draw attention in, while the sublety of the blazer and pants will keep 'em interested.
Giuseppe Zanotti Peep Toe Platform Pumps - A cool lavender slate color will almost blend into the pants.
Rebecca Minkoff Beau Clutch - In a pretty peach, this clutch continues to maintain the focus on the blouse by keeping the prints and colors delicate.
House of Harlow & Melinda Marie rings - Enough of this understated elegance...put some pow on your digits with two beautifully tough rings.

Since I have a million dollars and this took up a measley $1,750-ish, I can afford to do this again. Stay tuned for more!

Crop to it!

We must get used to it - the 80s are back in fashion. Full force. Thankfully though, it's only pieces here and there with an updated fit or combination. Like the cropped top...
Instead of wearing it with sweatpants and scrunchy socks or leg warmers, we are pairing it with trousers a la Rihanna...
...or shorts a la Sienna Miller and Whitney Port.
With just about any 2011 approved bottom, I'm loving the cropped top look! Despite the adorable combos displayed above by some of my fave style setters, I would say that my ideal way to wear them is with skirts. A high waisted A-line mini skirt, maxi skirt, or mid-calf accordion skirt is going to offer an excellent proportion for these tops.
This tribal print cropped shirt from Forever 21 and mid-calf accordion blue skirt paired with espadrilles would make a day at an outdoor art festival on cobblestone streets simply divine.

Imagine jaunting down the lake shore/beach in this XXI cropped peasant top and Zara long skirt...your hand in his hand and your platform sandals in the other hand...heaven!

Pair this striped crop top from XXI and jacquard pattern white mini with nude oxford flats, fedora, and cross body bag for brunch - your shirt will match the mimosas!

Summer Festival Chic

In the middle of July, I will be attending Dave Matthews Band Caravan, and in serious need of three different outfits that can beat the heat while keeping me completely stylish. Now, what kind of Chicagoan would I be if I only needed three days of ensembles for outdoor music festivals? Not a very good one. This city's festivals are epic and occurring every weekend through September. Therefore, I'll be sure to make nine items work for five completely different looks through some mixing, matching, and minor adjustments.

Look #1 courtesy of Gap - jean shirt tucked in to belted neon shorts, pink sandals, and a leather cuff.

Look #2 courtesy of Piperlime - Orange halter dress...with the suede thongs, jean shirt (knotted), and leather cuff
Look #3 courtesy of Old Navy - White Gauze shirt (buy a size up), fedora, and platform sandals...with the neon shorts and leather cuff.
Look #4 courtesy of already purchased - halter dress, gauze top (unbuttoned), belt, thongs, fedora, and leather cuff.

Look #5 courtesy of already purchased - halter dress, belt (belt it at the waist and pull up the dress from the belt to give more volume on the top and shorten the dress), neon shorts, leather cuff, fedora, and platforms.

Ta Da! Five amazingly on trend, reasonably priced, and mix 'n' match certified pieces! Let's not mention how amazing each of these pieces will look with what's already in your closet. Don't forget to incorporate your favorite sunnies and start jammin' in the sun!

La Petite Sirah

For my wine lovers out there...a quick lesson: Syrah and Petite Sirah are both Rhone grapes, they are not related, which was a surprise to me! Examination of the grape in Cali in the 1970s told the growers that what they had was definitely not Syrah, but rather a grape called Durif, an unpopular variety grown in tiny quantities in southeastern France, but currently booming in California and Australia due to it's mildew resistance. Petite Sirah produces wines that are relatively acidic, with firm texture, a black pepper bouquet, and flavors of blue fruit, black fruit, plums, and especially blueberries. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably purplish in color almost as dark as ink, typically rounder and fuller in the mouth, and offers a brightness that Syrah lacks.
I think that this offers an excellent metaphor between dressing our "average" body ladies and those of more "petite" body type. Besides the lack of size, there is no less of a punch or reason to not flaunt the ferocity that is presents. As I see it, all the more reason to capitalize by buying what's right to make yourself just as spicy, bright, and full as this delish wine! For the purpose of this blog, I will define "petite" as those under 5'3" as well as those of average height (up to 5'6") that lack curves or might be straight up and down.

Two of my favorite people to imitate style from are Rachel Bilson and Nicole Richie. Both hit the ruler at 5'2"-ish, can best be described as having minimal curves and skinny overall, dress fashionably with a hint of sex appeal and always thoughtfully show off their figure. Sienna Miller fits the straight up and down category at just under 5'6" and accomplishes the same goal. Since these ladies from Hollywood can dress incredibly well and adorn a smaller frame...why can't you? The pieces that they most often turn to are as follows: big scarves, v-neck or sweetheart necklines, tucked in blouses, long necklaces, boyfriend cardigans, and structured leather jackets and blazers to highlight the shoulders, decolletage, and face. Also, skinny or straight leg cropped pants, flared jeans (make sure they're long enough), belts at the waist, shift and maxi dresses, knee high boots, harem pants, ballet flats, nude heels, and mini skirts elongate the leg. Finish it off with structured handbags to further frame your frame. Some prints that will work for you are stripes, liberty print, and ikat.
Even with all these do's, there are some notable don'ts: A-line skirts that are longer than mid thigh; mid calf boots, cropped cardigans, and longer tees/sweaters that hit at the hips (they'll all cut you off at the widest places); non-belted slouchy dresses or jackets (they'll swallow you!), and turtlenecks, wide leg pants, or large floral prints.

Now there is no need to age these fashion do's and don'ts like you would a fine wine - go out and be petite, my petite sirahs...bold, fruitful, and full of body!

City mouse in the country

My day in Indianapolis for some catching up with family & friends while engaging in the Indy 500 festivities meant I needed a perfect blend of where I came from, and where I am...
Fedora from Goorin Brothers; scarf from Urban Outfitters; lace vest from Discovery (yeah, I was surprised too!); belt from J.Crew Outlet; brown tank from Target; skinny jeans from NY & Co; Michael Kors watch
