Polka Me This, Batman

Polka dot is a pattern consisting of an array of filled circles, generally equally sized and spaced relatively closely in relation to their diameters. Early in history, it was taboo to wear dotted patterns since the unevenness of the dots represented the first visual manifestations of such diseases as leprosy, bubonic plague, and smallpox. Ick. It wasn't until the rise of machines that the dots could be evenly spaced and perfectly circular. Inneresting, huh? Currently, it is most commonly seen on children's clothing and more playful attire such as bathing suits and lingerie and the last opinion about polka dots, before this season, is that it rarely appears in formal contexts. Pssssssssh. As was stated in the Los Angeles Times in 1940, "You can sign your fashion life away on the polka-dotted line, and you'll never regret it this season."

As evidenced by Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney, circles are so in. And every celebrity who's worth attention in the style department, is definitely in this circle. Whether in dresses, tops, shirts, or hose...the polka dots can evenly space some whimsicalness (not a word, I know, but go with it) into your wardrobe. It creates the perfect transition to fall when paired with rugged textures such as leather, wool, tweed, jean, and suede, but can also stand alone with ladylike pumps and a red lip. Your choice, my dears!
